HOWTO: How To Use the MathBio File Area

Where you can find the MathBio File Area

The Mathematical Biology Initiative has space on Truman's networked U: drive for project teams to store and share information with members and with other teams. This document explains who can use this resource and how to use it.

The MathBio File Area is a subdirectory (or subfolder) of the U: drive. When a member of the Truman community logs on to a campus computer, this shared drive should mount automatically along with other drives such as the Y: drive. The MathBio File Area is listed alongside folders for other University divisions and programs. See the figure at right.

All members of the campus community can browse the contents of this folder, but only members of the research teams can write or modify files in this folder. Permission to do this is limited, however.

Inside the MathBio File Area are folders for each of the working groups that involve faculty and students from the life and mathematical sciences. Access to each folder is limited to the members of that folder's research team. The Truman faculty who lead a given team can request that a person be added to the access list for their team's folder. These faculty are:

Team folders inside the MathBio File Area
  • Bindner-KCOM: Don Bindner, Jon Beck, Jason Miller
  • Buckner-Beck: Brent Buckner, Diane Janick Buckner, Jon Beck
  • Burt-Miller: Scott Burt, Jason Miller
  • DeCock-Gering: Dean DeCock, Jon Gering
  • Fielden-Ryan: Laura Fielden
  • Kelrick-Adams-Kim: Michael Kelrick, Michael Adams, Hyun-Joo Kim
  • Ma-Hammond: John Ma, Todd Hammond
  • Osborn-Thatcher: Jeff Osborn, Scott Thatcher
  • Walston-Thatcher: Tim Walston, Scott Thatcher

If other interdisciplinary working groups form, folders can be created for them as well. (If you look, you'll see that this has already happened.) Request for access modification or folder creation should be directed to Jason Miller or Jon Beck.

The one folder in the MathBio File Area not associated to a single group is the _General folder. This folder is for inter-team communication. All members of all teams can browse the contents of this folder and can save files to it. This space can be used to submit end-of-summer and end-of-year research reports, share handouts for mathematical biology workshops and seminars, and such.

Any questions about the way we can use the MathBio File Area should be directed to Jason Miller or Jon Beck, as should ideas for other ways we can use campus resources to support interdisciplinary collaborative work.
